Environmentally Friendly FPS

Dry and pre-action Fire Protection Systems are susceptible to corrosion when moisture from high humidity or residual water from flow testing are introduced to oxygen from the compressed air system supervisory gas.  The combination of galvanized steel, moisture, and oxygen combine to create a reaction called oxidation or corrosion.

Corrosion threatens the integrity and success of the FPS, causing water damage from pin hole leaks, or even system-wide failure.  It is crucial to prevent the development of corrosion within a Fire Protection System in order to ensure system efficiency, success, and to eliminate costly and disruptive maintenance and repairs.

One solution to prevent corrosion is to flush the FPS with chemical inhibitors that, when drained from the system, release dangerous and environmentally harmful chemicals into our ecosystem.  In addition, the drainage of the chemical inhibitors may also leave behind residual moisture in the piping that is exposed to oxygen during the drainage.  These elements of moisture and oxygen within the galvanized steel piping will spur the development of corrosion.

Use of Nitrogen as a supervisory gas used to maintain system pressure is a safe, reliable, cost-effective and ennvironmentally friendly solution to prevent corrosion.  Rather than treating the problem of oxidation and corrosion, Nitrogen eliminates and prevents the problem.

Traditionally, compressed air is used a supervisory gas in FPS, but this introduces oxygen into a system that may contain residual moisture and may therefore cause corrosion.

Nitrogen makes up 79% of the air we breathe and is the ideal green solution to FPS corrosion.  A Nitrogen Generator, such as the one installed in the N2-Blast FPS Corrosion Prevention System, supplies a steady flow of high purity Nitrogen gas produced using a simple PSA technology.  It produces N2 gas on-site and on-demand, saving on storage and transportation of high pressure gas cylinders.  Nitrogen provides no harmful side effects for the environment and is the environmentally friendly choice in preventing FPS corrosion.
